Benefits of WSTA membership

1. Unique membership base
The WSTA has the largest and broadest membership base of any trade association in our sector; multi-channel, multi-category, national and international, start-ups through to global brands, the full length of the supply chain. We therefore have a better understanding and are able to represent more of the industry.

2. Access to government
With former Cabinet office, Defra, HMRC and Fleet Street staff working at the WSTA, we have good, established communications with and contacts in Government, in Parliament and in the media. We are already working with members, officials and politicians to shape a programme of work that can influence the approach that governments (not just the UK) take to negotiating Brexit and life outside the European Union. We have also introduced and educated successive Ministers about our industry, organised summits (at Defra and at Number 10) and successfully encouraged active promotion of our products by Conservative government Ministers for the first time in a generation.

3. Brexit
Over recent years, the WSTA and its members have proven to be effective and responsible interlocutors with government and, as such, can be trusted to remain so in the coming months and years in order to manage and exploit fully the challenges and opportunities facing the industry. The WSTA has been proactive in setting up three specific working groups - Customs, Excise & Movement, Exiting the EU, and International Trade - each one focussing on a key area of interest.

4. One-of-a-kind in wines and spirits
We increasingly think of ourselves and our members as servicing a broader hospitality industry. This gives us particular strength when considering the issues and also opportunities that Brexit presents, both from a trade (on and off trade) perspective, as well as from a customs, movement and logistics standpoint.

5. With and for the Trade
Premiumisation, the emergence of English wine and the unparalleled boom in gin – all of which the WSTA has helped to advance – have boosted sales of higher priced wines and spirits in both on and off trade.

6. Value of wines and spirits
Size matters! The increasing importance of wine and spirits for the trade in value terms is clear. The WSTA are experts in statistics and speaks for the industry. The UK consumes over 1bn bottles of all wines and 370m bottles of spirits purchased from the off trade each year, worth over £11bn in sales. In 2016, over 240m bottles of wine were sold in the on trade, worth over £4bn. Around 1.7bn bottles of wine are cleared for sales in the UK per year, worth £7bn to the off trade and £4bn to the on trade; while sales of sparkling wine in the UK reached £2bn in 2017. Around 400m bottles of spirits are cleared for sale in the UK per year, worth £4.5bn to the off trade and £6.5bn to the on trade.

7. Corporate Social Responsibility
Through our work, and the work of our members, the WSTA makes five clear commitments:
- Promoting responsible, moderate consumption
- Reducing alcohol-related harm
- Supporting sustainable economic growth and provision employment
- Protecting consumers
- Preserving the environment

8. WSTA Member Services
The concerns of all parts of the WSTA’s uniquely broad membership is covered by the WSTA’s member services. From our committees such as the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group (responsible for maintaining and developing Challenge 25), Public Affairs Network, Export Promotion Working Group and Technical Committee, to dealing with issues such as labelling, licensing, taxation, sustainability, fraud and due diligence. We also launched and work closely with the nationally recognised Community Alcohol Partnerships to tackle local underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.

You receive regular updates on technical, legislative and policy issues as well as market reports and summaries

We cover a range of technical, legislative and policy issues, such as the Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme, labelling, voluntary health particulars and the UK’s relationship with the EU.  These will affect the basis on which you trade with your UK trading partners.

Market reports cover the on and off trade sales of wines and spirits.  They include rankings of the top importing countries and guest analysis from industry experts.

This provides exclusive access to industry briefings, technical advice, model policy documents and sector guidance.  We also post slides from seminars and events.

You can seek individual advice by telephone or e-mail

We regularly advise on a diverse range of issues, including importing, due diligence, labelling, CMO guidelines, licensing questions and issues with HMRC.

You benefit from inclusion in our Primary Authority relationship

In 2017 the WSTA entered a co-ordinated Primary Authority relationship with Salford City Council. Primary Authority is a legal partnership through which the WSTA can receive assured, tailored advice based on the general needs of our members.  As a member, you would automatically be included within this partnership and any assured advice would be available to you.

You can participate in our committees and events

Committees consider a wide range of topics, such as importing, exporting, distance selling, spirits, logistics, technical developments and responsible retailing. As well as providing a valuable forum for gaining insight, these are also a valuable networking opportunity We hold an annual conference themed around current industry issues and we also have a seminar programme, covering compliance, fraud prevention and technical issues.

You have a voice with government

Government prefers talking to trade associations rather than a large number of disparate businesses – it’s more efficient.  As a member of the WSTA, you are able to influence and participate in our efforts to ensure that government creates a favourable trading environment.

We regularly arrange visits for ministers and MPs and provide the secretariat for an active All Party Parliamentary Wines and Spirits Group.

You can obtain discounted services

We have a legal advice line, HR services, access to statistics and a wide range of other consultants, all of whom will give preferential rates to WSTA members.

Your business is more credible

HMRC considers that membership of a recognised trade association is something to be taken into account when undertaking due diligence.
