Retail of Alcohol Standards Group

RASG History

On 26 October 2005, the WSTA and leading retailers were called to meet the Home Secretary following extremely disappointing test purchase results in the summer’s AMEC 3 (Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaign).

Following the meeting, the retail representatives agreed that they would be able to achieve more through co-operation and agreed to form the Retail of Alcohol Standards Group (RASG).

RASG is an example of unprecedented cooperation between hugely competitive rival companies, it has provided a focus for the entire alcohol retail trade and continues to be a source of industry best practice. This includes working to develop and implement projects such as Challenge 25 (link) and Community Alcohol Partnerships (link).

By helping to change culture, it has increased retailer determination to sell alcohol responsibly and continues to work on new and developing issues around underage, proxy or illegal sales.

RASG’s work is fully supported by the Home Office, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and the Department of Health and is currently chaired by Nick Grant, Head of Legal Affairs for Sainsbury's, and members include:

Aldi, ASDA, Association of Convenience Stores, Bargain Booze, Booker Premier, British Retail Consortium, BP, Co-op, Lidl, Marks and Spencer, Mills Group, Morrisons, Musgrave, Budgens, Londis, Nisa-Today's, One Stop Stores, Rontect, Sainsbury’s, Snax 24, SPAR, Tesco, Total, Waitrose, Winemark, Wine and Spirit Trade Association.
