Job Description


To drive the effective implementation of supplier strategy across the UK’s largest independent drinks distributor to delight our customers with profitable, appropriate and qualitative wines. To lead and manage the interaction process of over 400 wines suppliers, from large to niche, via the team of 6 Supplier Managers (SM) ensuring the accurate implementation of the suppliers sales strategies to maximise the profit and volume opportunities.  

To be the main conduit of communication of the suppliers marketing budgets/targets/requirements to the wider business both from a sales and marketing process. The individual will need to manage an extremely busy workload and deal with a number of differing, sometimes conflicting, objectives of stakeholders. The role will be challenging, dynamic and hugely rewarding.   The Head of Supplier Management role is the pivotal in terms of communication, team leadership and effective management.

Tasks and accountabilities

  1. To manage the interaction process of all suppliers via the Supplier Managers (SM) to ensure we meet the targets and goals set by the Group
  2. Conduct quarterly reviews with all core suppliers and reflecting future strategy according to trading performance
  3. Mentoring to grow the expertise and ability within the team to ensure a high-performing, market-leading team
  4. Ensuring the accurate monitoring of the suppliers marketing budgets/targets/requirements are maximised to deliver the profit and volume budgets and communication of to Head of Supplier Strategy and the Buyers
  5. Manage the process of communicating the suppliers marketing budgets/targets/requirements to the wider business both from a sales and marketing process
  6. Support the SM with the TOP 50 suppliers to ensure clear and effective management to help retain and grow the relevant supply base
  7. Report on the SM sales plan quarterly to ensure activities are delivering growth in profit & volume to the Group Wine management team
  8. Lead team to maximise the suppliers/ambassadors/winemakers time and expectations when visiting the UK
  9. Work with Insight to monitor and review wine performance of the Country/Supplier/Style/Type to highlight trends to the Group Wine and act on information with constructive, decisive decision making
  10. Highlight competitor activity, key opportunities and recommendations to combat
  11. Raise the profile of the SM team within the Group particularly with senior management across the business with well-constructed clear presentations
  12. Own the supplier performance and closely identify opportunities of growth for all relevant suppliers
  13. Compile a monthly/quarterly/annual promotional plan is created to growth plans to deliver the A&P budgets for the focus suppliers
  14. Oversee and ensure productive relationships with Generic Bodies to implement investment opportunities
  15. Build a process for adhoc supplier investment and ensuring effective communication of plans with buyers
  16. To liaise with the Wine Specialist and training team with the updates and development from the suppliers and generic governing bodies
  17. Main point of contact for specified suppliers
  18. Build a sales plan for key suppliers across relevant trading channels
  19. Manage the activation with Marketing of a thorough promotional campaign for both By the Glass and bottle promotions across the Direct business
  20. Work closely with marketing to align business strategy so the Group has a seamless, joined-up Buying and Marketing function to maximise both commercial benefit and marketing collateral
Possible national or international travel is required.

  2. Educated to degree level or equivalent
  3. Previous FMCG marketing management and planning experience, specifically in wine Strong leadership skills
  4. Proven track record of leadership, management and development of an active team
  5. Able to balance variations of skills and abilities to produce a strong team synergy
  6. Calm and supportive planning skills
  7. Highly effective presentation skills
  8. Excellent communicator
  1. Knowledge of UK On-Trade and specifically of the key customers and potential customers in the Hotel and Food led sectors
  2. Sales and / or commercial marketing experience
  3. Knowledge of the drinks category with a keen interest in wine
  4. Excellent planner with demonstrable project management skills
  5. Excellent communicator
  6. Computer literate
  7. Strong levels of numeric
  8. Linguistic skills will benefit this role, in particular French and Spanish
  9. Highly commercial with strong analysis capability
