Martini Your Majesty? Q90 cocktail challenge for Queen’s birthday
Britain’s best mixologists can take up the challenge of making a cocktail fit for a Queen in a competition set by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association today.
Corks will be popping when entrants mix up their “Q90” cocktails - which could become the next Pimm’s Cup or Sloe Gin Fizz and go down in recipe book history as the celebratory drink for The Queen’s 90th birthday.
British gin and English sparkling wine makers will be battling it out to improve upon one of the Royal favourites, a Dubonnet Cocktail, made up of dry gin and orange bitters and traditionally served on ice.
Entrants have a fortnight to send in their gin and fizz recipes, which will be judged by an expert panel at a mixology event in London on Wednesday 8 June. All blends should emphasise great British flavours and ingredients and celebrate the summer season.
The winning tipple will be recreated in homes across the UK when people raise a toast to Her Majesty on Saturday 11 June – her official birthday weekend and also World Gin Day.
Environment Secretary Elizabeth Truss said:
“What better way to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday than with the best of British cocktail ingredients. Our first class drinks industry is fizzing with excitement, having established a world class reputation for quality – from the gin and tonics enjoyed in the US to the English wine sipped in France. I want this competition to unleash the creativity of our spirit entrepreneurs who have the chance to pioneer a brand new cocktail in honour of this proud moment in our history.”
WSTA Chief Executive Miles Beale said:
“We are delighted be celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday with the Q90 cocktail challenge. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best of our British gins and English sparkling wines. We hope that everyone gets involved and toasts Her Majesty with a Q90 on her special day.”
The Q90 challenge is part of the celebrations for 2016 is the Year of Great British Food - a Defra-led five-year campaign to celebrate the best of our food and drink and build Britain’s reputation as a great food nation.
