WSTA welcomes EU and Canada Free Trade Agreement

The Wine and Spirit Trade Association has welcomed the successful conclusion to negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic & Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada.

Ratification of this agreement will make the Canadian market a far more attractive destination for British exporters of gin, vodka and other white spirits who have until now had to compete unfairly against other products.

For example, Canada is an important market for UK gin exports. According to the IWSR, Canada was the 4th largest market in 2012 for UK gin exports. Unlike exporters of brown spirits, exporters of white spirits from the UK to Canada currently face an import tariff. The agreement, which is the first free trade deal between the EU and a G8 country, will see:

* Full elimination of all import tariffs on European spirits and wines;

* More transparency in the way Liquor Boards operate in Canada
