WSTA Budget Submissions

In 2009, the major drinks trade associations have issued a joint Budget submission to HM Treasury supported by an economic assessment study compiled by Oxford Economics.

In April 2009, The Chancellor increased all alcohol excise duty rates by 2%.

Excise duty is currently charged at £1.61 per 75cl bottle of still wine, £2.06 per 75cl bottle of sparkling wine, and £5.94 per bottle of 70cl spirit (37.5%abv).

The industry directly employs more than 650,000 people in the production and retailing of alcohol and supports a further 1.1 million jobs in the wider economy.

The industry contributes 2% of the UK’s total output (£28.6billion). It paid nearly £15 billion in excise duty and VAT in 2007/08.
