UK Wine & Spirit Industry key facts: 

  • Consumer expenditure on Alcoholic Drinks is about £42.6 billion
  • Consumer expenditure is £18.8 billion on beer, £15.4 billion on wine and £8.3 billion on spirits
  • UK excise duty is £1.61 on a bottle of still wine (75cl), £2.06 on a bottle of Sparkling wine (75cl) and £5.94 on a bottle of spirit (70cl at 37.5% abv) 
  • The UK alcoholic drinks industry contributes 2% of the UK’s total output (£28.6billion). It paid nearly £15 billion in excise duty and VAT in 2007/08. 
  • The UK per capita consumption is 27.9 litres on wine, 2.2 litres on spirits (@100% alcohol) and 106.4 litres on beer
  • The UK alcohol industry directly employs more than 650,000 people in the production and retailing of alcohol and supports a further 1.1 million jobs in the wider economy
